Moving to Dubai with kids: what school steps should you take, and in what order?

Attestation of school documents. The single longest-lead item on the entire list. For admission into higher grades, transfer certificates and school records from outside the UAE generally require attestation, a multi-step legalisation involving authorities in your current country and UAE missions. Depending on the country, weeks to months. Start it when a move becomes probable, not confirmed; an attested document you never use costs far less than an un-attested one you need in August.

The document folder. Assemble early: the child's birth certificate, passports for child and both parents, school reports covering at least the last two years, the transfer certificate, vaccination records, and a set of passport photos. Scan everything; Dubai admissions run heavily on uploaded copies.

The curriculum decision. Decide the system before you look at a single school: continuity with your home system for shorter stays, destination-driven choice for longer ones. Shortlist schools before choosing where to live. The step most relocating families run backwards. Dubai traffic makes the school commute the defining daily logistic, and moving house here is far easier than moving schools, so the sane order is: shortlist two to four schools that fit your child, then rent inside their commute radius. Apply from abroad. You do not need to be in the UAE to apply, and popular schools reward early applications. Budget for non-refundable application fees of roughly AED 500-1,500 per school, remote or recorded assessments where offered, and one to two weeks to accept an offer with a deposit once it lands, commonly around 10% of annual tuition or a fixed AED 5,000-10,000. Know the visa sequence, and that it is not a blocker. Enrolment finalisation needs the child's residence visa and Emirates ID, but schools routinely admit children while the family's visas are in process, with copies to follow. What you cannot skip: the child's visa application itself needs the attested birth certificate, which is one more reason attestation opened this list.

Check the age cut-off, especially for autumn birthdays. From the 2026-27 academic year, the admission cut-off moves from 31 August to 31 December, so children born September to December enter a year earlier than under the old rule, as the youngest in their group rather than the oldest in the next. If your child sits in that window, make this a deliberate decision, not a default.

The short-lead tail, best done after arrival or in the last stretch: uniform purchase from the school's approved suppliers, three to four sets including PE kit; school bus registration, where used, at roughly AED 5,000-12,000 per year; lunch plans, stationery and devices per the school's list; and medical file transfer plus any vaccinations needed to align with UAE schedules. None of it needs more than days; none of it deserves your March.

Relocations rarely respect academic calendars, and Dubai's schools know it: places open through the year as families move out, mid-year admission is normal at many schools, and onboarding a January joiner is routine rather than exceptional. Two honest caveats: the most oversubscribed schools and the exam-critical years are the exceptions, and a mid-year child benefits doubly from a school that fits, because settling is the whole game. Given the choice between a well-fitting school now and a more prestigious waitlist for September, the fit usually wins the year for the child.

Less fixing and more watching than most parents expect. The first weeks of a new school in a new country are turbulence by design: some quiet, some tears, some "I hate it here" is the normal cost of the move, and it fades as the child adapts.
