2. What curricula can you choose from?

The big four by enrolment are British, Indian (mostly CBSE), IB and American, with French, German, Japanese and other national systems also present. 3. Do expat children have to attend private school?

In practice, yes. Public schools teach the national curriculum in Arabic and serve primarily Emirati students; expat families overwhelmingly use the private sector, which is why Dubai's private school market is one of the largest in the world.

4. What days of the week is school?

Monday to Friday, since the UAE moved its working week in 2022. School days typically start between 7:30 and 8:00 and finish between 14:30 and 15:30, with variations by school and age.

5. How does the school year run?

Three terms, from late August or early September to late June or early July, with breaks in December and around March or April. Indian curriculum schools traditionally run April to March, though many in Dubai have aligned with the September start.

6. How much does school cost in Dubai?

7. What is the registration deposit?

Usually 10% of annual tuition, payable when you accept an offer. It is generally non-refundable but deductible from the first term's fees, so treat it as a commitment, not a placeholder.

8. Can schools raise fees whenever they want?

No. Fee increases are regulated under the KHDA School Fees Framework: the maximum increase a school can apply for is tied to its inspection rating and the annual Education Cost Index. Schools operating in Dubai for fewer than three years cannot request increases at all. For 2026-27, the question is moot: KHDA has confirmed a full tuition freeze, with no increases at any Dubai private school.

9. Can you pay in instalments?

Almost universally yes: most schools offer three termly payments aligned with the academic calendar, and some accept monthly payments at a small premium.

10. Are there scholarships or sibling discounts?

Many schools offer sibling discounts, typically on the second and subsequent children, and some run scholarship or founder-family programmes, especially newer schools building enrolment. Always ask; these are rarely advertised prominently.

11. When should you apply?

12. Are waiting lists real?

At the most in-demand schools, yes. At many others the list is short or moves quickly, and mid-year places open regularly as families relocate. Treat "we have a waiting list" as the start of a conversation, not the end of one.

13. What documents do you need?

Typically: passports and visas for child and parents, Emirates ID (once issued), recent school reports, a transfer certificate from the previous school, and vaccination records. 14. What is changing with admission age in 2026?

From the 2026-27 academic year, the age cut-off moves from 31 August to 31 December of the admission year, for all public and private schools, nurseries and early childhood centres starting their year in August or September. Children born September to December will fall into a different year group than under the old rule.

15. Can a child join mid-year?

Yes, at many schools. Dubai's population is mobile, places open during the year, and schools are experienced at onboarding mid-year arrivals. The most oversubscribed schools are the exception rather than the rule.

16. Do children sit entrance assessments?

Most schools assess applicants, with the depth varying by age and school: play-based observation for the youngest, English and maths assessments for older children, plus previous school reports. Selective schools use results competitively; most use them for placement and support planning.

17. Is Arabic compulsory?

Yes. Arabic language study is required in private schools, with separate tracks for native and non-native speakers, and Islamic education is required for Muslim students. The weekly load varies by age and curriculum.

18. How do children get to school?

19. What are class sizes like?

KHDA sets maximum class sizes, and in practice most schools run classes in the low-to-mid twenties, with premium schools often advertising smaller groups. Ask for the actual number in the year group your child would enter, not the school-wide average.

20. Do Dubai schools teach AI?

In public schools and MoE-curriculum private schools, AI is a mandatory subject from kindergarten to Grade 12 since 2025-26. British, IB, American and Indian curriculum schools are not covered by the mandate, and their AI provision varies widely, so ask each school directly. 21. What support exists for children with additional needs?

UAE policy mandates inclusive education: schools are expected to admit and support students of determination with individual education plans, curriculum adaptation and tailored assessment. Provision quality varies in practice, so meet the inclusion team, not just admissions, before deciding.
